Designing Around Seahorse Sexuality!

Submitted by on June 27, 2010 – 1:51 amNo Comment

Sometimes the challenge of communicating with a particular culture can turn out to be quite fun! Take this exhibition, design case study:

Culture: a conservative, Christian based society that is extremely sensitive to topics such as parenting roles, gender, and sex.

Challenge: How to accurately share the parenting and pregnancy reversal of seahorses to the parents and children (ages 2 – 10) in the society above– without mentioning sperm, eggs, sex, or defining the “right way” of parenting to the visitor.

Solution: a picture can speak a thousand words without saying too much.  By working with full time civil engineer and part time illustrator/graphic artist, Sonny Au, we designed a fun way to explore seahorse life while respecting the sensitive topic of our audience.

Think About It:  How have you or how would you use design to work around issues to communicate a particular lesson or fact? How would you make it fun?
