The New York City Dessert Truck
The wonder of the Dessert Truck, which is often parked across the street from the St. Mark’s Hotel in NYC, reminds me of Prometheus taking one of the gods’ greatest gifts and giving it to human savages. Desserts that contain unique ingredients, have been prepared by a master chef, and have a beautiful, clean presentation belong in the hallowed walls of four or five star restaurants on the Upper West Side.
Then think of the East Village, right outside the Astor Place subway stop. A stop that doesn’t even get the respect of consistent subway train visits on late nights or weekends. You have a host of college students, iPhone app developers, fashion hopefuls, the can-collecting homeless, the self-promoting rapper, and entrepreneurs walking shoulder to shoulder on the night draped streets.
But Chris Chen (MBA) and Pastry Chef Jerome Chang (Le Cirque) brought the sweets out of the delicacy temples to the New York City street tribe, without even requiring a wardrobe change! The menu has some permanent items such as the Chocolate Bread Pudding and The Dark Chocolate Molten Cake, but they have some seasonal items as well. So, at least you have an excuse to come by 4 times a year and then add on a dozen or so more sweet tooth visits.
I had the pleasure of consuming the Goat Cheese Cake. This heavenly dessert takes you through a distinct series of flavor and texture experiences. First, is the sweet, honey-like textured Rosemary Caramel, then a tangy-tart creaminess, and finally, a melted-velvety finish with the surprising release of stinky cheese gleefully biding you to start the adventure over again.
Be ye tourists, or be ye natives, get thyself down to 8th Street and 3rd Ave to get a taste of the Dessert Truck and continue this wonderful, culture, and flavor exchange!
